This glacier is dying.
Nordenskiöld Glacier (Nordenskiöldbreen) is 25 km long, 11 km wide and flows southwestwards. It’s a living entity, located in Svalbard, a High Arctic Norwegian archipelago near the North Pole.
Nordenskiöld Glacier is experiencing significant retreat and degradation due to climate change.
Nordenskiöld Glacier is part of the broader glacial system in central Spitsbergen, which has shown surface lowering and retreat over recent decades, loss of mass balance, meaning it’s shedding more ice than it gains from snowfall, and increased meltwater runoff, contributing to sea level rise.
In short, it’s dying, slowly but steadily, as part of a larger cryospheric collapse in the Arctic.
This work depicts that loss.
The work is hand printed by cyanotype process and developed from my Spitsbergen Artist Center residency.
